On 21 September, we attended the graduation ceremony for the 12 new volunteer ECE teachers whom we had trained for the Kasenengwa District in the Eastern Province.

The graduation, which was very well joined by the villagers, took place in a village far from the region’s main roads, accessible only via a very bumpy track, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Chipata. Just imagine: there isn’t a single borehole in this village, and the children come to school with a small bottle; once that’s empty, they have no more water.

The celebration was held here because this village was centrally located in relation to the home villages of the newly trained teachers, thus enabling them, their families and other teachers to travel a shorter distance to attend.

As always, the ceremony was enlivened by singing and dancing and was attended by senior ministerial, provincial and district officials, as well as the highest tribal authority of the Mpezeni Chiefdom, the Chief of the Ngoni people.

There was great excitement amongst the newly trained teachers – and amongst us too – as we fully realised just how important it is for the children in these villages to have a qualified teacher.

This course marked the conclusion, not only of the project for the Chipangali District – which led to the construction of two schools and the training of 18 new E

CE teachers – but also of the project for the Kasenengwa District, which led to the construction of two ECE schools and the training of 22 new teachers.

We have recently completed a new project, “ I Nuovi Asili di Santina Gusmini” about which we will inform you shortly.
